Why are emergency contraceptives taken?

EMERG, is taken to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when birth control fails

EMERG works by delaying the release of an egg from the ovary until sperm are no longer active. It's most effective when taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex, but it can still prevent pregnancy if taken up to 72 hours after.
